Tags
Tags are a powerful way to organize, track, and manage objects in Shipwell. Think of tags as custom labels you can apply to supported objects (like orders and shipments), helping you categorize and find data and objects based on key attributes or business needs. Tags allow for flexible and dynamic text labels that makes data and object tracking more efficient and tailored to your workflow.
What Are Tags?
Tags are short, descriptive labels that you can assign to data (e.g. order tags) to indicate their status, priority, special instructions, etc. They function like keywords, enabling you to quickly filter and search for objects with specific tag values both through the API and in the Shipwell UI.
For example, you might use tags like urgent
, backordered
, or international
to classify items based on priority, fulfillment status, or destination. These tags will appear in the Shipwell UI in an easy to view and searchable way in listings, search results, etc. (whereas custom data does not appear in the UI at all and UI custom fields appear in the details and data entry of an order or shipment for example).
Why Use Tags?
-
Flexible & Customizable To Your Business Processes
- Tags are completely flexible, allowing you to define categories and attributes that make sense for your business.
-
Efficient Filtering
- Easily locate orders using tags to filter by specific criteria, like high-priority orders.
-
Improved Organization
- Create a structured view of your data or workflow steps, making it easier for teams to manage items at various stages of a process.
-
Enhanced Reporting
- Use tags to generate reports and analytics, helping you track trends, identify bottlenecks, and optimize processes.
How Tags Work in Practice
When an object that supports tags (e.g. orders) is created or updated in the system, you can assign one or more tags to it. These tags are then used to group, sort, and filter in various views of the data, such as dashboards, lists, searches, reports, and/or API queries.
Tags make it easy for systems and teams to collaborate across different departments—logistics, customer service, and management by creating shared understanding around key attribute values.
Tags have human-readable titles and descriptions as well as support consistent hexadecimal colors (i.e. "#77F94D") in the Shipwell UI.
